What is an Exercise Physiologist?

An Exercise Physiologist (EP) is a university-qualified allied health professional trained to use exercise as medicine. Unlike a personal trainer, an Exercise Physiologist is clinically qualified to assess, design, and deliver exercise programs for people managing injuries, chronic health conditions, and complex medical histories. Think of it this way: a personal trainer helps healthy people get fitter. An Exercise Physiologist helps people get healthier — safely, clinically, and with precision.

At Witness The Fitness in Paddington, Brisbane, our two Accredited Exercise Physiologists — Tori and Harry — work with clients to create personalised programs designed around your body, your medical history, and your long-term health goals. Whether you're managing a chronic condition, recovering from injury, or simply ready for a smarter approach to your health, you're in expert hands

How is an Exercise Physiologist Different from a Personal Trainer?

Who Can Benefit from Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiology isn't just for people recovering from injury. It's for anyone who wants to take a smarter, medically-informed approach to their health. At Witness The Fitness, our EPs work with a wide range of clients, including:

Chronic Disease Management

Living with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, arthritis, or high blood pressure? Exercise is one of the most powerful tools available to you — when it's prescribed correctly. Our EPs design evidence-based programs that help manage your condition, reduce medication dependence, and improve quality of life

Injury Rehabilitation

Post-surgery, post-fracture, or recovering from a soft tissue injury — including complex cases like ACL reconstruction. Our team designs progressive programs that restore strength and function safely, reducing re-injury risk.

Weight Management and Body Composition

We combine clinical exercise prescription with InBody 570 body composition scanning to give you a data-driven approach to fat loss and muscle gain. You'll see your muscle mass, body fat percentage, and visceral fat tracked over time — not just a number on the scales.

Postnatal Return to Exercise

Returning to exercise after having a baby deserves expert guidance. Our EP team works alongside WTF's Mums & Bubs program to support new mothers in rebuilding strength, improving pelvic floor function, and returning to full fitness safely.

Strength and Healthy Ageing (50+)

Staying strong, mobile, and independent as you age is one of the best investments you can make. We design programs addressing bone density, balance, muscle mass, and cardiovascular health — keeping you moving well for decades to come.

Mental Health and Wellbeing

The evidence for exercise as a treatment for anxiety, depression, and stress is overwhelming. Our EPs prescribe the right type, intensity, and frequency of exercise to support your mental health — not just your physical health.

Performance and Return to Sport

Whether you're an athlete returning from injury or someone who wants to train with purpose, our team understands performance. With backgrounds in elite sport, we bring both clinical rigour and athletic insight to every program.

WorkCover and NDIS (Coming Soon)

We are in the process of becoming a registered WorkCover and NDIS provider. Contact us to discuss your funding options.

Our Approach at Witness The Fitness

Most Exercise Physiologists work out of clinical rooms. We work out of a real gym — and we have two of them.

At Witness The Fitness, you get access to the same level of clinical expertise you'd find at a specialist EP clinic, in an environment that feels welcoming, community-driven, and built for actual training. No sterile waiting rooms. No stranger-in-a-corridor small talk. Just expert professionals who know your name, understand your goals, and have the equipment to actually get you there.

What Makes WTF Different

  • Two Accredited Exercise Physiologists on staff — more availability, broader specialisation, and a team approach to your care
  • Gym-based sessions — train with real equipment in a real strength training environment, not a clinic room
  • InBody 570 integration — track your body composition (muscle, fat, hydration, visceral fat) throughout your program
  • Community — you're joining a gym that already knows your name, not a clinic that sees strangers all day
  • Continuity of care — Tori and Harry work alongside the WTF coaching team so your EP program and gym training connect
  • Medicare eligible — claim through Medicare with a GP referral (up to 5 sessions per year under the Chronic Disease Management plan)

Meet Our Exercise Physiologists

Tori, Accredited Clinical Exercise Physiologist at Witness The Fitness Paddington Brisbane

TORI

Accredited Clinical Exercise Physiologist

She has worked in private practice as a Clinical Exercise Physiologist since 2019, specialising in using exercise as medicine — the principle that expertly prescribed exercise is a primary treatment modality for non-communicable disease.

  • Athletic performance and return to sport
  • Postnatal exercise and pelvic floor rehabilitation

Medicare & Private Health Rebates

Exercise Physiology sessions at Witness The Fitness are Medicare-eligible. Both Tori and Harry hold Health Care Provider (HCP) numbers, which means if you have a chronic health condition, you may be entitled to subsidised sessions under the Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan.

Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan

If you have a chronic health condition (such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, or chronic pain), your GP can refer you to an Accredited Exercise Physiologist under the Medicare CDM plan. This gives you access to up to 5 rebated EP sessions per calendar year.

  1. Book an appointment with your GP and ask for a CDM plan referral to an Accredited Exercise Physiologist.
  2. Bring your referral to your first appointment at WTF. Choose to see Tori or Harry — our team can help match you based on your needs.
  3. Claim your Medicare rebate after each session.

Private Health Fund Rebates

Most private health extras covers include Exercise Physiology. Tori and Harry's ESSA accreditation means WTF is recognised by all major health funds including Medibank, Bupa, HCF, NIB, and more. Check with your fund for your specific rebate amount.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

Your initial EP consultation is a 60-minute session with either Tori or Harry. Here's exactly what happens:

FAQs

  • Do I need a referral to see an Exercise Physiologist?

No — you can book directly with Tori or Harry without a GP referral. However, if you have a chronic health condition, a GP referral allows you to claim Medicare rebates (up to 5 sessions per year under the Chronic Disease Management plan).

  • How do I know whether to book with Tori or Harry?

Both Tori and Harry are fully qualified Accredited Exercise Physiologists. As a rough guide: Tori brings particular expertise in complex injury rehabilitation (including ACL reconstruction), athletic performance, and return to sport. Harry specialises in clients 50+, chronic disease management, and strength for everyday health. If you're unsure, contact us and we'll help match you to the right EP for your needs.

  • How is an Exercise Physiologist different from a physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists primarily diagnose and treat injuries — especially in the acute phase. Exercise Physiologists focus on long-term rehabilitation, chronic disease management, and ongoing health improvement through exercise. Both roles are valuable and complementary.

  • How is seeing Tori or Harry different from a regular WTF PT session?

A session with our Exercise Physiologists is a clinical allied health service — Medicare-eligible, covered by private health extras, and anchored in a full health assessment and clinical-grade body composition scanning. It's specifically designed for people managing medical conditions or complex health goals, not general fitness training.

  • Is Exercise Physiology covered by private health insurance?

Yes — most private health extras covers include Exercise Physiology. Both Tori and Harry are ESSA-accredited, meaning WTF is recognised by all major health funds. Check with your insurer for your specific rebate.

  • How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your condition and goals. Many clients see meaningful progress within 8–12 weeks. Some clients with chronic conditions continue long-term. Your EP will give you an honest timeline at your initial consultation.

  • Can I see Tori or Harry even if I'm already a WTF member?

Absolutely — and this is one of WTF's biggest advantages. Our EPs already know how you move, your training history, and your goals. An EP consultation adds the clinical layer on top of that relationship.

  • Where are you located?

Witness The Fitness is located at Shop 8, 155 Baroona Rd, Paddington QLD 4064 — servicing Paddington, Milton, Red Hill, Bardon, Rosalie, Kelvin Grove, and Brisbane CBD.
